Work has begun on the construction of a state of the art Wastewater Treatment facility on the site of the existing Bushmills Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW).
This 18 month project involves an overhaul of the current systems. Wastewater collected at Portballantrae will be transferred to the new Bushmills facility for effective treatment before being discharged to the river Bush. The existing wastewater treatment facility at Portballintrae will be refurbished as additional storage capacity for stormwater only, meaning that from Dec 2010 onwards no wastewater effluent will be discharged from this location.
To facilitate this new arrangement, a pipeline will be laid between Portballintrae and the new Bushmills WwTW to transfer wastewater flows. Once all the new infrastructure is in place the old Bushmills WwTW will be decommissioned and the site landscaped with indigenous planting around the new facility.
