Coalisland Ministerial Visit

25 August 2010

The Department for Social Development's Permanent Secretary, Will Haire, visited Coalisland on the 25th August to have the chance to learn more about some of the recent projects funded by DSD in the area and their impact.

In conjunction with Business in the Community (BITC) and DSD, Geda embarked on the Adopt a School Programme during the school year 2009/2010. The two schools that Geda gave support to were Primate Dixon Primary School and St. Joseph's College.

A summary of the activites that Geda got involved with were:

- Time to Read and Time to Count Programmes with Primate Dixon School in which a pool of 8 Geda volunteers (4 volunteers per week) spent one morning per week working with 8 pupils on their reading and arithmetic.

- A group of pupils from each school got to visit Geda Head Office and got the opportunity to meet staff in a range of job roles and learn about recycling policies and procedures.

- 2 Geda volunteers delivered a presentation to a group of pupils in each school on types of job roles available; real experience of working in construction sector; skills and qualities sought; preparing for life after school and the world of work

- Geda provided a team of volunteers to deliver 2 practical support challenges to St. Josephs's to improve the exterior school environment - (i) treatment of exterior flagging around school to reduce moss and discolouration and (ii) replacement of broken flags and outdoor maintenance work.
