Brief Description:This project was successfully completed in partnership with D.R.D. Water Service under the project specific banner of ETHOS. It was for three new sewage treatment works from design through to final commissioning. The locations were existing WwTW sites requiring the phased commissioning of new, with the decommissioning of existing treatment while maintaining current discharge consents. All three sites involved major reinforced concrete works with the Kircubbin works being completely housed in a partially buried concrete structure.
The Greyabbey site required cofferdam construction to facilitate the construction of the main process tanks and for the storm tanks with the process tanks being housed in a portal framed superstructure with blockwork walls and a clad roof. The sites also had significant pipelines with Drumaness having a 3km pumping main which was installed using directional drilling and Kircubbin having a 1.4km gravity intake sewer laid at depths of up to 5m.
Geda as Lead Contractor were responsible for managing all aspects of the scheme, including design, planning, co-ordination, Hazops and commissioning. Completed under NEC Option C contract the high priority given to the value engineering/innovative aspects of the scheme produced significant savings.

Ceequal:

That these savings were achieved without compromising quality was particularly rewarding as Greyabbey and Kircubbin Scheme, both located in an area of Special Scientific Interest, were awarded the highest score of all projects entered in the 2004 CEEQUAL Awards.

The judges commented:

It was due to the high attention of detail to the environmental, cultural and heritage, community relations and land use issues that achieved the CEEQUAL award. To date it is the highest scoring project in the UK, obtaining a result of 91.9% - well into the Excellent Category.
